3 Simple Ways to Get Rid of Odours from your Home

Nobody, yes, we say nobody, likes to talk about household odors, but it is super important to deal with them. Animal, food, and musty smells can settle into your rooms like an unwanted home guest that refuses to leave. To eradicate these smells, most people use air fresheners, but they actually do not work as they only mask the smell.

There are several different kinds of methods that people adopt to get rid of bad odours from their houses. Many people are seen plugging deodorizers into electrical sockets, and some of them are seen lighting an arsenal of scented candles. But these do not help in the long run, and it is also always not possible to go to the market and buy them once they get exhausted.

So instead of using these, it is always advised to use a few household staples like baking soda, distilled white vinegar, coffee grounds, vanilla extract, and lemons to get rid of the odours once and for all.

People are often seen mopping, scrubbing, and cleaning the house just to get rid of that bad smell. But this is a tedious task, and it is obviously not possible to scrub every single day.

So, to help you with this, we have curated a list of some ideas that will definitely help you eradicate that stinky smell completely.

1. Eliminate common culprits

Before you begin your odour removal journey, you must first take action against the culprits responsible for the stinky odor. Start by removing that full trash can from your kitchen or that gym bag that is lying in your hallway. The reason behind my suggestion that you get rid of these items is that searching for remedies to eradicate the odour will require some steps. So, you first need to detect smells that are causing problems. If you find it difficult to detect smells, call an honest friend of yours to your place and ask them to give your home a critical sniff test so you can start troubleshooting.

2. Look for drawers or closets that smells musty

The musty furniture smell that is particular to old furniture and cabinetry can make anything you put inside smell, too. So before you start filling your drawers and closet, you need to prep them for storage. All you've got to do is crinkle up some newspaper, sprinkle it with white vinegar, and stuff it inside each musty drawer or place it inside your closet shelf for a couple of days to absorb the bad odour (this is a good way to freshen your smelly shoes as well). Once the smell goes away, you can keep your drawers smelling good by placing scented dryer sheets in drawers or on the shelves. You can even keep silica gel packs that you get when you buy shoes, electronics, or some food products in the drawers. The silica gel packs help keep out moisture, and this moisture is the main culprit behind creating that awful smell. Remember to replace them every 60 to 90 days.

3. Check for the smell in your refrigerator

There can be times when you accidentally store the leftover food in your refrigerator uncovered. We often do not put lids on containers and place open ones in the fridge. This is one reason why your refrigerator smells bad. If you have a fishy-smelling refrigerator, you should pull up your socks and start cleaning out shelves and drawers. Start by scrubbing all the shelves with a mixture of warm water and baking soda. Once you are done doing this, you need to wipe them off with a mixture of white vinegar and warm water. To keep odours away, you can even keep a box of baking soda open on a shelf in the back of your refrigerator and freezer. So don't forget to replace it on a monthly basis. Alternatively, soak a couple of cotton balls in vanilla extract and store them in a small dish in the back of your refrigerator. Remove them once the cotton balls have dried up, and then replace them with new ones.
